Future cannabis tourism haven may be in trouble

The company that is looking to make a cannabis tourism destination out of a small town in California may run into legal trouble with the county.

Earlier in August, American-Green, an Arizona-based cannabis company, announced it purchased the entire town of Nipton, California for $5 million. The company plans to market the town as a cannabis hotspot with amenities like bed-and-breakfasts and mineral baths.

The issue facing the town is a county ordinance which bars all sales, distribution and production of cannabis in unincorporated counties, including Nipton.

Stephen Shearin, the project manager, said he is aware of the county law but recognized possibility of the problem being worked out. Shearin’ added the county might be friendly to the venture after the project generates revenue and benefits residents.

The county counsel’s office sent American Green a letter six days after the announcement of the sale, which informed the company of the law and said it would address any violations with citations and criminal enforcement if necessary.
