Short-term deal extends state medical cannabis protections

Federal protections for medical cannabis states are to remain through December 8 after a short-term spending bill was approved by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on Friday.

The $15.3 billion disaster aid package, debt limit increase and government spending extension included existing language for the Rohrabacher-Blumenauer amendment, which would prevent the Justice Department from using funds to interfere with medical cannabis states.

The inclusion is a short-term victory for the policy which was removed from House vote consideration for the 2018 spending bill.

House officials said the fight to keep the policy on the spending bill will continue until the final version is released, and noted the policy was already included in the Senate’s approved version of the bill.
