For the first time, a majority of Republicans support cannabis legalization
A majority of American Republicans say they support cannabis legalization, the highest level of public support Gallup has found in nearly 50 years.
Out of the people surveyed, 51 percent of Republicans said they support legalization, up from 42 percent a year ago, and 72 percent of Democrats are in favor as well.
Overall, 64 percent of Americans support cannabis legalization, marking it as the highest percentage ever recorded in Gallup polling.
“The trajectory of Americans’ views on marijuana is similar to that of their views on same-sex marriage over the past couple decades,” the poll said. “On both issues, about a quarter supported legalization in the late 1990s, and today 64 percent favor each.”
With the percentages growing every year, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population now lives in a state where cannabis is fully legal.
