Yes, you read that correctly. A former television actress is running for Governor of New York and wants to legalize cannabis for social use. In a world where television stars have started taking office, there’s nowhere for this one to go but up (hopefully).

Cynthia Nixon is the Democratic challenger to current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Nixon announced her position on cannabis Wednesday, saying the state’s cannabis laws have disproportionately had a negative effect on people of color and should be changed.

“There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: we have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” Nixon said. She believes this, along with the possibly “hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue” would be good for The Empire State.

Nixon is hoping to challenge Cuomo in the Democratic primary set for Sept. 13. Cuomo is not a fan of cannabis, calling the plant a “gateway drug” just over a year ago. He’s also reportedly “unconvinced” cannabis should be legal for social use.

New York currently has a medical cannabis program, though it is thought of as one of the most restrictive in the country.

In January, Cuomo proposed a study of whether it’s plausible to allow social cannabis sales in New York after neighboring states Vermont and Massachusetts have legalized it. New York’s Department of Health is progressing the study after the state’s budget was put in place last month.

“On this issue, there are many opinions, there are many cultural opinions, there’s a lot of division in the Legislature and what we said is let’s get the facts and let’s make the decision on the facts,” Cuomo told reporters Wednesday.

Nixon voiced her full support for legalized cannabis in a video posted on her Twitter.

“In 2018, in a blue state like New York, marijuana shouldn’t even be an issue,” she said.
