Could cannabis make you a better parent? Some mothers and fathers believe pot can strengthen their bond
Pot-loving parents and advocates are arguing that consumption of cannabis in front of children is the equivalent to knocking back a few beers or wines. Some mothers and fathers even go as far as to say that cannabis makes them a better parent.
A survey conducted by cannabis technology company Eaze back in 2017 actually revealed how 63 percent of 10,000 California cannabis consumers were parents who reported using cannabis daily.
One of the main reasons why plant supporters argue this fact is due to a rapid rise in medical and recreational cannabis legalization. As the formerly uneducated learn about the perks of pot, opinions are evolving.
America is warming up to the idea of parents using cannabis
The negative stigma that once spotlighted cannabis as a “gateway drug” is dissipating with each day that passes, as fresh scientific research is proving the potential of cannabis as a medicine.
What’s more, research and development is normalizing recreational use and stripping the drug of its bad reputation.
An ever-expanding number of states are legalizing cannabis in some form, with many places on the map, such as Colorado and California, regulating cannabis similarly to alcohol.
Increasingly relaxed laws surrounding cannabis use is prompting parents to light up more openly.
The repercussions are not a worry for parents using cannabis in weed-friendly states and with such a large number of people having access to an extensive selection of strains (e.g. low-THC, high-CBD strains,) consumers can still go about their daily duties when consuming bud.
One Oregon mother was even bold enough to publicly post a picture of herself taking a bong hit, whilst breastfeeding her baby. (You can see that photo here.)
“Needed a safe place to share this beautiful picture — feeling blessed with Krystal Rose Shillingford-Holm,” Kayla Marlow wrote for the photo caption.
Critics around the globe slammed Marlow for sharing the photo to a private Facebook cannabis parenting support group.
Another mother named January Jones, pictured with her son to the right, believes that cannabis makes her a better parent.
Cannabis use among parents is proving problematic for some
Despite the growth in pro-cannabis support, some families are facing difficulties in regards to smoking their stash.
Shockingly, some states are prohibiting children from being accepted into certain schools if their parents are pro-cannabis. Other families run the risk of being tracked down by Child Protective Services if they use cannabis around their kids.
Conversely, cannabis is hailed as the ultimate sidekick for many mothers and fathers.
“I was on prescription medications for years after my kids were born to just help me sleep, and my doctor wanted to prescribe additional medications to help my anxiety,” one mother disclosed to the Colorado Pot Guide.
“I researched tons of alternatives and finally landed on cannabis. I have found that an edible or two in the evening helps my brain chill, my body relax, and even relieves my aches from being active all day. I sleep better and it has helped me to be a calmer mom to my boys,” the mother concluded.
Even professional mothers and fathers are dabbling in cannabis to become healthier role models.
The plant is commonly being used as a replacement for after-work cocktails and in many instances, cannabis use is enabling busy parents to unwind in privacy, not to mention around their children’s school and homework schedules.
“Yeah, I consume near my kids at times. Near, not next to. I love my kids and just want to continue to be as open and transparent with my boys. I’m calmer and more engaged when I’ve consumed [cannabis]. Do I need to be lit all the time, maybe not. Does it help? Hell yeah it does! As long as it doesn’t take away from necessary time with the kiddos, I say, light it up. The kids get a happier parent,” one father named Derrick said.
Time will tell whether or not the idea of parents using cannabis gains a positive or taboo reputation.
