Colorado to host first cannabis-themed film festival

Colorado will host its first substantial cannabis-centric film festival this weekend, a themed festival that features the positive aspects of cannabis culture through a shared community film experience.

From narratives to documentary features and short films along with genres like comedy, horror, science fiction, drama, and action, the festival presents independent filmmaker’s cannabis and hemp themed movies to cities around the United States.

Director of CannaBus Culture Film Festival Tim Mattson said the cultural stigma around cannabis has kept most of programmers away from making it one of their main subjects, even though cannabis has become increasingly legalized in the U.S.

The festival’s first feature is “Baked in Brooklyn,” starring Josh Brener as a guy who decides to sell cannabis after losing his job. The second screening, “Dark Harvest,” features Cheech Marin in a lawless cannabis landscape filled with intrigue and violence.

This year, CannaBus marks the first big cannabis-themed festival in Fort Collins’ since 2010. Mattson said he is confident this year’s Fort Collins event, that showcases on Sept. 22-23, will fill all 226 seats for both nights.

“We considered Denver [for the festival], but our deal is we’re trying to hit more millennials, so college towns are a focus,” Mattson said.

In the future, Mattson would like to keep growing his budget and showcasing the current state of affairs in the world of cannabis.
