Canada’s largest cannabis producer will double its greenhouse production

On Wednesday, Canopy Growth Corp., a medical cannabis company based in Smith Falls, Ontario, announced it will develop up to 3 million square feet of additional greenhouse capacity.

The move, that came as a joint venture agreement to form a new company, BC Tweed Joint Venture Inc., will more than double Canopy’s cultivation footprint.

According to Bruce Linton, Chairman and CEO of Canopy Growth, the joint venture allowed the company to expand their operational footprint for greenhouse production, and focus on cannabis cultivation as well.

“Our cannabis expertise already operating the largest cannabis greenhouse in the sector combined with experience of our new partner’s extensive large-scale greenhouse production record, is great news for our customers and investors,” Linton said.

Having managed and operated over 5.8 million square feet of greenhouses in North America, BC Tweed Joint Venture will bring multi-generational knowledge of greenhouse operations and efficiencies. As a large scale, low cost, hydroponic greenhouse operator, the partner will also come in with its valuable knowledge on food safety, traceability, and sustainable production.

The partnership will allow Canopy’s total greenhouse production footprint to increase to up to 4 million square feet and with Canopy’s operation now expanding into six Canadian provinces, the ultimate plan of the company is to grow internationally.
