The price of cannabis in cities around the world

A gram of cannabis

A gram of cannabis costs about $32.99 in the cannabis-illegal city of Tokyo, making it the most expensive gram of cannabis in the world. Decriminalized-city Quito in Ecuador has the cheapest cannabis at just over a dollar for a gram.

Seedo, a German company that manufactures hydroponic grow devices, recently released a study with street and store prices from 120 cities around the world from countries that allow adult cannabis use and those that strictly prohibit it.

The top three least expensive cannabis grams were in cities located in countries where cannabis use is either legalized or decriminalized like Ecuador, Columbia and Paraguay. The most expensive cannabis grams were in cities where cannabis use is strictly illegal, consequently, Norway being the exception placing at number 10 having decriminalized cannabis just last month.

The data also showed prices of cannabis in US cities, from highest to lowest. Washington, DC, where cannabis use is legal for social use, placed highest on the chart with a gram costing over $18. The least expensive cannabis grams can be bought in either Seattle or Denver, both cannabis-friendly cities, costing you less than $8. Only three cities where cannabis use is illegal earned spots on the chart, with Philadelphia street prices being over $11 per gram and Dallas and Houston a little over $10.

The data also measured the amount of cannabis each city consumes from highest to lowest.

New York, where social cannabis use is still prohibited, consumes over 77 tons of cannabis each year, which is almost twice as much as the second highest cannabis consuming city: Karachi in Pakistan. In Karachi cannabis use is still prohibited, although citizens consume about 42 tons. New Delhi, the third highest cannabis consuming city resides in India, where users are able to consume almost 39 tons of cannabis each year.

With the top three highest consumers of cannabis in US being New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, many might wonder why only one of those cities, Los Angeles, permits social cannabis use.

If New York City taxed the 77.4 metric tons of cannabis it consumes each year, on average, it could generate tremendous tax revenue of approximately over $156 million each year.
