On this day, millions of weed aficionado’s around the globe will celebrate their favorite plant in unison.

Where did the term “420” originate?

While the origins of the holiday are not widely known, there is a theory if where it all began. Back in 1971, a group of pot-loving students from San Rafael High School would meet at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur to light up a doobie.

In a bid to keep their daily meetings a secret, they decided on a specific time and name for their smoke sessions – 420.

Their secret didn’t stay hidden for long, what with the term “420” now being used worldwide.
