Southern Colorado introduces the country’s first cannabis-funded scholarships
Colorado’s cannabis tax dollars have already helped public schools and the homeless within the state. Now, those tax dollars will be sending students to college.
In southern Colorado’s Pueblo County, any student planning to attend Pueblo Community College or Colorado State University-Pueblo may apply for the United States’ first cannabis-funded college scholarship. The scholarship will provide up to $475,000 from Pueblo’s cannabis tax, giving each student about a $1,000 scholarship.
It is estimated that 300-400 students attend the aforementioned colleges, and the scholarship fund will distribute any leftover money to students based on merit and need.
“We are the first community in the world to provide a cannabis-funded scholarship to every graduating high school senior,” stated a press release distributed by the scholarship program. “It is so critically important to make college affordable for our youth if we want to provide long-term economic opportunity to our community. Too many kids can’t afford to go to college, with this program we are taking cannabis-tax revenue and using it to provide a brighter future in Pueblo.”
