Cannabis and skincare: Origins hemp-based face mask distributed online through Sephora
Research firm Brightfield Group projects that the CBD market will reach $1 billion within the next three years
Origins, a creator of skincare and natural products, has confirmed its involvement in the cannabis space by developing a brand new facial mask called “Hello, Calm.”
The relaxing and hydrating face mask produced by Origins and Sephora contains cannabis sativa hemp oil. It was launched exclusively online at Sephora last month.
The company’s entrance into the cannabis market is sure to send a lot of attention in the direction of Origins. Among all of the brands featured in the Estée Lauder Companies portfolio, Origins is the first premium brand to branch out into cannabis.
Origins and Sephora partnership
The new “Hello, Calm” face mask was developed in collaboration with Sephora. It is a non-intoxicating solution created using seed-derived cannabis sativa oil from the hemp plant.
Although the research for CBD oil – which is produced from the plant leaves, flowers and stalk – is expanding by the day, more research has been carried out on cannabis sativa oil. Some studies have revealed the oil’s potency for treating inflammation caused by Rosacea, eczema and acne.
For example, this study demonstrated how cannabinoids like CBD can reduce inflammation. “Cannabinoids suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain by targeting α3 glycine receptors,” is the title of the study.
Origins has long contemplated using cannabis as a beauty ingredient
More beauty brands have started dabbling in cannabis deals in a bid to present consumers with diversity and pharmaceutical appeal.
Research firm Brightfield Group projects that the CBD market will reach $1 billion within the next three years. Talks about using CBD to create skincare products were lingering in the Origins office before the Origins-Sephora partnership was announced.
Julie Van Ongevalle is the global general manager of Origins. Now that the negative stigma around cannabis is being lifted, she says that it is easier to market such a product.
“We didn’t do it before because it had negative connotations, but as more people start to understand the benefits of it — even in medicine — it’s become more acceptable,” Van Ongevalle said. “We didn’t want to shock our customers.”
Origins-Sephora collaboration will appeal to a wider age group
The appeal of attracting an emerging target market prompted the Origins-Sephora deal to be struck, leading to the launch of the “Hello, Calm” CBD-enriched face mask.
By modernizing their product range with cannabis-infused skin care products, Origins can enhance communication with customers, not to mention encourage a more millennial audience. According to Ongevalle, the average age of an Origins customer who buys a product through Sephora is 29 years old, whereas the average consumer age across North America is 37 years old.
Now available online on the Origins and the Sephora official websites, the “Hello, Calm” mask will be sold in stores from October 5 onwards. Sephora’s online store also features cannabis-containing products from brands like Fresh, Milk Makeup and High Beauty.
