One third of adults are cannabis consumers in cannabis legal states
According to a recent survey, up to 65 percent of adults stated they consumed cannabis at least “a few times every week.”
The survey, which came from canna-business consulting firm Enlucem, considered 1,000 adults above the age of 21 in California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Colorado to find out how many people are taking advantage of legalization laws and what they are purchasing.
Results found 36 percent of Oregonians have purchased legal cannabis in the past six months, while Washington, Colorado and California reported 35 percent, 32 percent and 31 percent of adults are active cannabis users, respectively. In Nevada, 28 percent of respondents claimed they had visited a dispensary during the first half of 2017.
The most recent 2016 nationwide Gallup polls on cannabis reported over 60 percent of all American adults support cannabis legalization, while only 13 percent admit to be current users.
In Nevada, dispensaries sold a record-breaking $27 million of cannabis since social legalization took off.
“These are often people who had been purchasing untested illegal marijuana from the illegal market, which is often connected to crime rings and violent crime,” Riana Durrett, head of the Nevada Dispensary Association, said. “Nevada’s retail stores are appreciative there is a significant demand that exists for medical and adult use marijuana in Nevada, but caution that taxes, regulatory, and operational costs must be maintained at a level that allows them to compete with the illegal market that does not pay taxes on sales.”
In addition, researchers asked respondents who said they had not consumed cannabis in the past six months, whether they were willing to try it in the near future, and found at least 8 percent of them in each state were potentially interested. The majority of the group said they would be interested in consuming edibles, not flower.
The survey also analyzed the popularity of different legal cannabis products and found flower is still the most popular purchase.
