Avery Collins is not your average 25-year-old.

Not only is the young athlete a professional long-distance runner but also, he consumes cannabis as part of his daily running routine.

On a typical week, Collins will cover 140 miles of land around Centennial State and approximately 20 to 40 miles, all before he attends his job at a specialty running store. That’s without even mentioning the elevated terrain he traverses up each morning, of which usually extends for thousands of feet.

Cannabis is the nutrient-dense powerhouse that Collins uses to amplify his athletic ability.

So much so, in fact, that his public persona centers around the use of this green ‘superfood’ and has led to the runner being sponsored by a cannabis company – The Farm in Boulder, Colorado.

The young fitness fanatic pays his bills with the money he receives from race victories and sponsorships.

A participant (and often, a winner) of numerous 100 and 200-mile ultra marathons, Collins has earned a solid reputation as a triumphant athlete who enjoys smoking the herb.

His sponsor, The Farm, describes itself as the “finest recreational marijuana dispensary” in the heart of Boulder. Locally-owned and operated, the dispensary specializes in craft cannabis for adults aged 21 and above.

During a meeting with long-distance runner and writer Paul Flannery, Collins revealed how he uses weed to induce a feeling of calm and focus.

“My niche in this sport really falls under big and bad,” Collins told SB Nation for their “Sports in the Age of Cannabis” series.

“I don’t label myself as any kind of superhuman athlete. I thoroughly believe that I’m gritty . . . I can take a punch to the face and fight back the whole way,” he continued.

Avery Collins uses cannabis for medical and recreational purposes

https://www.sbnation.com/a/weed-and-sports-420/avery-collinsThe lazy stoner stereotype is being replaced by pot-loving athletes like Collins.

Cannabis is frequently used by athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, with a whopping 89 percent of NFL players using the plant, according to retired NFL veteran Martellus Bennett.

Just like the players from these teams, Collins depends on cannabis for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

A cannabis consumer and advocate, Avery Collins is helping to disprove the typical “taboo” cannabis reputation with his honesty and openness.

Primarily, he uses CBD topicals to relieve inflammation and pain in his muscles. However, Collins also claims to take a powerful pipe hit or chow down on a THC-infused edible prior to setting off on a run around Colorado’s picturesque mountain ranges.

“The benefit of being high is you’re more in tune with your body. It keeps you more alert and aware,” he told SB Nation.

Despite his exposure in regards to using cannabis before training, Collins does not use the plant before or during official races. In fact, the ultra-runner offers to submit drug tests at each of his competitions.
