Uruguayans to be the first to sign up for state-vetted cannabis

Citizens of Uruguay were able to register to buy cannabis for social use through a government-regulated system on Tuesday.

The state Cannabis Regulation and Control Institute said nearly 600 people have signed up for the program already. Those who have signed up will be able to buy a maximum of 10 grams of cannabis per week from pharmacies, with the cost of a gram being only $1.30.

More than 6,600 growers are registered by the state and 51 smokers’ clubs have been authorized under a 2013 law. The cannabis is grown by two private yet state-regulated farms near Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo.
