Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks, similar to Uncle Sam’s version of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has approved a total of 38 products containing CBD for people who want cannabis in Mexico.

If you’re not already familiar with CBD (cannabidiol), it is a non-intoxicating compound of the cannabis plant.

A naturally occurring chemical, CBD is being hailed for its therapeutic benefits, from its ability to relieve chemotherapy-related nausea to its suitability as an anxiety treatment, skincare treatment, natural pain reliever… the list goes on.

Included in the list of products approved for Mexico’s cannabis system will be oil-filled capsules, topicals, edibles and even a CBD-laden energy drink.

Prescription not necessary for cannabis in Mexico

Both recreational cannabis consumers and medical cannabis patients will be able to get their hands on these products in Mexico without a prescription.

To this date, seven cannabis companies have been given the green light to start selling capsules, oils, topicals, foods, and drinks made from this non-psychotropic constituent of the cannabis plant.

The makers of the products being sold in the Mexico cannabis market include:

  1. Finat México
  2. Farmacias Magistrales (Master Farmacies)
  3. Acietes Orgánicos de América (Organic Oils of America)
  4. Med Mex
  5. CBD Science
  6. Endo Natura
  7. CBD Life

Of the aforementioned companies, four are located in Mexico, while two are from the United States and one is based in Spain.

Approved cannabis products in Mexico won’t get you “high”

The idea of using weed may seem quite shocking for the uneducated. Cannabis has long been considered a “gateway drug” and a stoner’s best friend.

However, research has proven the benefits of cannabis, which doesn’t have to get you “stoned.” That’s because CBD is an approved medicinal product that does not contain the psychoactive element, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

This is not to say that the Mexico cannabis products won’t contain traces of THC. It just means that there won’t be enough THC in the weed to get you high.

In order to be sold and distributed legally under the rules set forth by Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks, the THC content must not surpass one percent.

Raw materials can be imported to produce Mexico cannabis products containing THC

At the current time, just one company in Mexico is permitted to import raw materials for THC-containing medical cannabis products. That company’s name is Farmacias Magistrales and it has been given the go-ahead to produce THC-rich medical cannabis products for patients who have a prescription from their doctor.

THC is equally as medicinal as CBD, except it is a psychoactive cannabinoid. It may prove useful for enhancing mood, stimulating appetite in people with anorexia and eating disorders, as well as inducing a good night’s sleep.
