Medical cannabis company sponsors Native American powwow
Gathering of Nations, North America’s largest Native American powwow, was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in April with a not-so-typical sponsor this year: a medical cannabis company.
The cannabis company, Ultra Health, has several retail dispensaries across New Mexico and entered a sponsorship agreement with Gathering of Nations in 2016 which is in effect until 2021.
A recent article in The Atlantic described the sponsorship as “contentious,” due to Native Americans’ high rates of substance abuse. The Konbini reports that while some may have an issue with a medical cannabis company sponsoring the powwow, zero people have overdosed on cannabis while 88,000 and 480,000 deaths are attributed to alcohol and tobacco, respectively. Tribes have historically high rates of abuse with both alcohol and tobacco.
