Las Vegas prepares for social use sales on July 1
Officials in Clark County and Las Vegas have approved 37 dual-use permits for medical cannabis dispensaries to begin selling to adults over the age of 21, one of which will be on the Strip.
Although a Carson City judge recently ruled in favor of alcohol wholesalers, who argued they have exclusive rights to cannabis distribution licenses for 18 months, recreational sales will go on according to a Department of Taxation spokeswoman.
Department spokeswoman Stephanie Kapstein stated as long as dispensaries meet requirements adopted at an emergency meeting on Monday, social use sales may launch on July 1.
The meeting, held by the Nevada Tax Commission, set regulations for the packaging and labeling of social use cannabis products. The new regulations prohibit any cannabis packaging that depicts cartoon characters, mascots, action figures, balloons or toys that may appeal to children.
Advertising cannot depict underage use of cannabis, nor can it appear in media where the audience is more than 30 percent children, including sports or entertainment events that allow entry to people under 21. Labels must indicate THC levels and include warnings against driving under the influence.
