Mexicos lower house passes bill approving cannabis for medicinal use

Mexico’s lowest house passed a bill Friday approving cannabis use for medicinal purposes.

The bill does not legalize smoking in public, but it does direct the Health Department to “design public policies to regulate the medicinal use of [cannabis] and its derivatives.”

The bill passed by a 374-7 vote and will need to go to President Enrique Pena Nieto to be signed into law.

If passed, the bill would authorize cultivation of cannabis plants for medicinal and scientific purposes and establish that industrial products with less than 1 percent THC would be legal to buy, sell, import and export.

Last year the Mexican government began granting permits letting patients import medicinal cannabis products and has decriminalized small amounts of cannabis.
